We can’t think of a better way to sneak into some areas in the beautiful islands of Malaysia than by jet ski. A guided tour with Mega Water Sports is one way to go on a trip of a lifetime. A jet ski tour beats a boat tour says a novice operator. Riding a jet ski allows more freedom because it can reach remote areas and a person can cruise at their own pace while taking in the sites.
An article published on the CNN website provides us with some details of what goes on during the jet ski tours. The ride begins at Canara Bech where an instructor provides a quick riding and safety lesson and before you know it, you’re underway on the Andaman Sea heading 12 miles to the Island of Dayang Bunting where Pregnant Maiden Lake is located. Dayang Bunting’s south side has a pier that’s the perfect place to moor skis. Once secured, you’ll take a five minute walk through a lush jungle on the way to the warm green waters of the lake. Monkeys hanging in the dense trees are a common sight along the way. Tourists usually kayak, swim, or just float on the surface of the lake while admiring the scenery that surrounds them. Approximately after 40 minutes of lake life, the tour group gets underway again and the guide allows a little freestyle action on the skis before heading to the next stop; Singa Besar Island. The island is known for its huge white bellied sea eagles and Brahminy kite eagles.
Langkawi is located off northwest Malaysia and is home to more than 100 islands which hold an abundance of biodiversity within them The islands rise from the sea and have lush forests atop where numerous animals reside, ranging from large raptors to monitor lizards. A person can sit and view the animals from their ski or just peer into the water to watch pretty tropical fish swim by!
“Most people never in their life can do this—explore the ocean, see the animals, feel so free,’ says Mega Water Sports Guide Shahrul Rizwan. I’m always smiling, always happy when I’m out in the ocean. I feel like I can do anything I want.”
The Watercraft Journal: For those of you, who do not know who Tanner Thomas is, tell the audience about yourself.
Tanner Thomas: Friends call me Tanman, I’m 25 years old. Born and raised in Ketchikan Alaska. I have been riding jet skis now for ten years. Five of which have been involved with professional competition. I started off riding 550’s in AK for a few months out of the summer and each winter with the support of many great people and influences upgraded jet skis. I’ve worked my way up from 550’s and 650’s to SJ’s and SXRs and then to Rickters. I started off traveling from Alaska and doing summer tours in 2009 with my Ford Ranger to race my SXR and freeride my SN SJ. I drove all around the west coast from Washington to California chasing Freeride and Racing events. Couch surfing with great friends to make it possible.
WCJ: You were born in Alaska? How does a guy from Alaska get involved with riding stand ups let alone competing professionally? What obstacles have you overcome living there?
TT: I was given the opportunity by my Dad’s great friend Brent Johnson in AK to ride my first JS 550 when I was 14. In Alaska we didn’t have motocross tracks or anything other than being surrounded by water. So in the summer time when we couldn’t snowmobile anymore, jet skis were about the best thing to get to ride. Living on an island in Alaska is great for a lot of people, for me it was tough with shipping challenges, lots of rain and cold weather, and the jet ski scene was very small. Thanks to the support of an amazing community I was able to work hard and venture out into the big world to chase jet ski competitions. That in turn allowed me to travel the US with a purpose and meet a ton of amazing people in the jet ski community. Jet ski forums like X-H2O.com and PWCToday.com was the source for a lot of my excitement and knowledge in the early days.
WCJ: You offer your own riding school, but not only that you give up-and-comers or expert riders the chance to flip your own $35,000 Rickter. Tell us a little more what your school offers.
TT: TNT Freestyle school is my way of offering the 10 years of knowledge and experience that brought me my first World Championship to other people. My team and I have spent years developed world class equipment for the rider who wants to accelerate their abilities and take jet skiing to a whole new level of fun.
I now offer different levels of freestyle training. For years I’ve been working with people like Rick Roy, Taylor Curtis, Hiro “Ninja” Ogino and learning along side team mates like Mark Gomez and Abraham Ho. I have worked hard to find the right techniques and input to help people improve their riding. This DOES NOT substitute the 100s of hours you will need to truly perfect these techniques, but for most people we can speed up the process and allow them to enjoy the sport of freestyle more. It is best if you have your own ski, but I do rent my Rickter XFS Ninja 1200 to clients for guided training.
The Backflip clinic is for riders with stand up riding experience that have always wanted to do a flat water backflip but do not have access to a capable ski. I have offered the Backflip Clinic to 5 riders so far, all of which have completed the rotation of a backflip. It is like a bucket list item for most and something that I am happy to be able to share with people. For more information on the TNT Freestyle School and Backflip Clinic visit Tanner-thomas.com/school
WCJ: What else do you like to do besides riding your jet ski?
TT: I have recently been getting into riding motocross and have backflipped my KX250F thanks to FMX Rider Jimmy Fitzpatrick. I would like to continue riding my bike and doing more freestyle on 2 wheels. Otherwise my time is mostly invested in my new job working for Renu Chem Inc. the makers of Jet Renu. I am an International Factory Representative opening up a distribution network of distributors and dealers of our products.
WCJ: What do you do to prepare for an event or competition? What type of training do you do before the big day? Do you have any rituals you do the day of?
TT: Every location you go to ride at can hold its own set of challenges. Talking with other riders and experiencing these events first hand is the only way to know how to fully prepare for them. The water can be very unpredictable, so hope for the best and prepare for the worst.
Nothing makes you a better rider than actually riding. Riding as much as possible in the weeks/months leading up to an event. Then allowing your body to heal and be in good health for your best performance. Then most of your ability will be almost muscle memory. Having a good positive attitude and faith in all the hard work you put in beforehand, will allow you to do the best you can do. When you know you tried your best you’ll never regret a thing.
My biggest advice to riders before a contest is stretch especially in cold water or weather conditions. I have thrown my back out of alignment 3 times in the air doing big extended tricks that my brain was ready for but my body was not. That ruins weekends for sure.
WCJ: Tell the audience some of your major riding accomplishments?
TT: 2015 IJSBA AM Freestyle World Champion; 2015 IJSBA AM Freestyle National Champion; 2016 IJSBA Pro Freestyle National Champion; First in the world to do Double Backflips off a V-wake
WCJ: Congratulations that is quite the list of accomplishments. I saw your video online of that double back flip. Awesome! Is there any one you would like to thank?
TT: The list of people to thank is truly 10 miles long. Everyone in the jetski community has supported me in one way or another. Whether I slept on your couch, you sponsored me directly, or you just clapped your hands after watching me ride. I appreciate this sport for what it has given me. That has been many life lessons and exciting experiences to hang onto.
For some people who don’t know, I have mostly made my jetski career possible through working commercial construction in Alaska. I do not get free jet skis, I rarely receive free parts. In order to be good at anything you have to make a full investment. The top guys in the world are there because they love the sport and love to push themselves individually. The ultimate personal challenge of man/woman with his/her machine.
With that said though there are some people that have given me the non-stop support and opportunities over the years to reach the level of riding I am at today; Taylor Curtis of TC Freeride, Kyle Kennedy at Dasa Racing, Hiroyuki Ogino “Ninja”, Rick Roy of Rickter, Skat Trak, Jet Lift, KMG Racing and Jet Renu.
I also want to thank the people that supported me whether I was good as jet skiing or not. People that wanted to see this small town kid from Alaska go out into the world and live his dreams. Nothing I have done would be possible without you.
My entire family who would come to every event they could; my friends who rode with me and traveled with me chasing the same dream; and companies in Alaska that sponsored me to actually make ends meet after what I worked for just wasn’t quite enough: BAM Construction, Tyler Rental, Alaska Diesel Power, Dawson Construction, Hoyt Enterprises, Azeo Vodka, Sign Pro, Alaska Marine Lines, Eichner and Eichner, KH2O and Swinburnson
Recently, Krash Industries’ Australian riders, Ryan Savage and Joel Barry hit Round 3 of the International Freeride Watercraft Association’s European Championship Final Nazare, Portugal. The Nazare event was the last event of the Euro leg of the tour and the much anticipated large swell didn’t show up so the competitors made the best of the the flat to small wave conditions. Unfortunately, Barry was stopped at the quarterfinals even though he pulled a huge Barrel Roll in the tricky conditions.
Though neither Barry or Savage made a podium finish, they’re stoked about returning Nazare next year with 50 Cals in order to “slay the European Beaches!” Here is a quote with some details about the 50 Cals; straight from the Krash Industries website: “The Krash Industries 50 Cal is available in two models, for riders who predominantly ride surf then you will want the 50 Cal surf which includes reverse angle sponsons and a 4th chime which adds greater stability as you carve the face of the wave. On the other hand if flat water freestyle is your thing, then you will chose the 50 Cal 148 Flatwater freestyle model. The 50 Cal Flatwater has a specifically designed beam, draft and rocker that enables the rider to flip and role effortlessly in all water conditions. Both 50 Cal models come in 4 color options.”
We can understand why the Aussie pilots would want to take a couple of 50 Cals to Europe. They are diverse machines that would bode well no matter the conditions. Regardless of where Barry and Savage finished, they made Australia and Krash Industries proud according to the many comments on the Krash Industries Facebook Page.

If you’ve been looking to buy a brand new PWC, now is the time! Cycle Springs Powersports is offering killer deals on all 2017 Yamaha EX Sport models. With a price of $7,599.00, you best jump on this deal before they disappear! The EX Sport is playful, fun and affordable; giving you everything you could want in a PWC.
The EX is powered by Yamaha’s award-winning 1049cc TR-1 three-cylinder marine engine that is 40% smaller in size, 20% lighter in weight and provides better fuel economy than Yamaha’s previous four-cylinder Yamaha MR-1 engine. This engine delivers a smooth yet high power output with low fuel consumption and low exhaust emissions. The specially designed, one-piece cylinder and crankcase assembly provides tremendous engine rigidity that’s truly lighter and stiffer than two-piece designs.
Check out some features of the EX Sport:
• Slant Detection Switch: This electronic switch stops engine and oil pumps immediately if the watercraft becomes overturned; protecting the engine from water ingestion.
• Dry Sump Lubrication: The ski uses two engine oil pumps to deliver lubricated oil to each moving part with water-jacketed sump and oil backflow protection.
• Yamaha Engine Management System (Y.E.M.S.): The integrated, computerized management system controls and adjusts such functions as ignition timing, fuel injection mapping, engine diagnostics and OTS. The OTS function of Y.E.M.S. activates when the operator releases the throttle lever and attempts to steer the watercraft. This assists the operator in turning while the watercraft is decelerating.
• Thermostatic and Pressure Controlled Cooling System: Water flow through the engine is controlled by a thermostat and pressure system and is maintained by a pressure control valve.
• Finger Throttle Lever: Provides added comfort while reducing hand fatigue.
• Corrosion Protection System: Sacrificial zinc anodes protect the engine from harmful galvanic corrosion. Stainless steel fasteners (nuts, bolts, hardware) provide a long service life and gives you piece of mind that you won’t have to deal with crusty parts down the road.
• Electronically Controlled Variable Ignition Timing: For exact ignition advance control at all throttle positions and RPMs.
• Cooling Water Intake Filter: Filters out harmful debris that could cause blockage of important cooling water passages.
• Jet Pump Propulsion System: The pumps are manufactured with YDC30; a combination of zinc and copper alloys, developed by Yamaha marine engineers that offers excellent corrosion protection.
• Mechanical Reverse: Allows the watercraft to be backed up off a trailer or out of tight spots where you cannot turn around easily.
• Ultra-Lightweight, High Strength Hull and Deck: The EX Sport’s hull is designed to be light and strong. Under the waterline is an all-new hull design that is manufactured to precise tolerances. This lightweight SMC hull delivers excellent stability for one, two or three-up riding and towing. It also gives precise responsiveness and predictability for thrilling one-up riding. The progressive V-Hull design with it’s integrated bow spray guard provides excellent maneuverability, handling and comfort.
• 29 Liters of Total Storage: The EX Series offers ample storage options in the bow, glove box and under the seat for all of your personal belongings.
• Comfortable One-piece Seat: Ergonomically-designed and contoured for added support; this extra-long seat is easily removed for quick access to the engine compartment.
• Dual Concave Mirrors: Automotive style and convenience.
• Large Boarding Platform & Re-Boarding Step: Provides a stable platform for re-boarding. The step is designed to make it easier to re-board after a swim. It conveniently tucks away when not in use.
• Yamaha’s Trademarked Visibility Spout®: A waterspout from the rear of the craft that improves the watercraft’s presence on the water.
When it comes to the personal watercraft aftermarket parts industry, two well-known names that come to mind right away are RIVA Racing and Hydro-Turf. As we announced back in August 2016, RIVA Racing loaded their online store with tons of Hydro-Turf products; ranging from traction mats to seat covers and other various items. In fact, RIVA Racing can proudly say they have the single largest online selection of Hydro-Turf traction mats in the world; more than Hydro-Turf itself!
These mats are perfectly tailored to fit all Kawasaki, Sea-Doo, Yamaha and Honda applications and look like they came straight from the factory. Hydro-Turf’s traction mats provide excellent footing in the slippery foot-wells of your watercraft.
RIVA Racing has just announced a blow-out sale on quite a few of their Hydro-Turf mat kit products. These kits are up to 70% off! The products on sale cover various different models of Sea Doo, Yamaha, Kawasaki and Honda PWCs. Act quick as these wicked mat kits won’t last long! This deal will only last while supplies do.
OK, we had our fun with yesterday’s article, now it’s time to get to work. What exactly is this “Burrasca” anyways? Well, for those paying attention, one-time Benelli became Belassi, and the B3R, which in its earliest form (for the better part of half a decade or so ago), was a 3-cylinder, turbocharged 2-seater runabout pushing over 330-horsepower (that is, reportedly). We’re trying to keep the snark out of our tone, but the on-again, off-again legacy of both the watercraft maker and its fabled runabout is the stuff of legend. From its narrow, Fomula 1 style nose, rigid seat and cuts-you-like-a-knife edges made the machine absolutely sexy, but all but impossible to produce – at least in any major quantities.
And let’s just ignore literally years of no-shows to major unveilings, a procession of unsubstantiated claims, pie-in-the-sky promises to would-be dealers, and y’know, a complete and total disregard for any sort of compliance with the standing United States Coast Guard requirements thus permitting the vehicle to be sold within the single-largest marketplace on the planet. Rather, in recent months, Belassi has pushed to get the word out about their latest iteration of the rechristened runabout. Named “burrasca” (pronounced “burr-as-ka”; and explained as the Italian translation for “storm” but more appropriately translated as “squall”), Belassi hopes it to be equally as formidable.
To accomplish such a goal, Belassi began by employing both the very best in materials and minds at their disposal. 2016 IJSBA World Champion György Kasza was enlisted to help develop and test a unique hull lined with “internal carbon fiber multi-layer reinforcements” capable of achieving 4g in the corner. In addition to the carbon fiber, Belassi has imbued the Burrasca with a king’s ransom in state-of-the-art materials, including aerospace-grade aluminum, automotive paint and forged carbon composites. As per Belassi, the “hull and deck [are] made of infused high performance composites” reinforced with a full carbon 3K X-frame, with a “high-serviceability hood, seat frame and base, side covers, rear spoiler and exhaust covers are all made of full 3K carbon fibre.”
This keeps the total dry weight down to a featherweight 350kg (772 pounds), particularly for a 143-inch (11-foot, 11-inch) long, 46-inch (3-foot, 8-inch) tall 2-person runabout. Considering its 60L (15.8 gallon), and absurdly advanced cooling and oiling system (more on that in a minute), this machine will hold quite a bit of fluids, bumping that total weight nearly 200-pounds (with a full tank of gas, 5-quarts of oil and a full 1.5 gallons of coolant). All of that carbon fiber and aluminum comes in handy when that machine starts getting into fully-loaded Sea-Doo GTX 300 Limited territory. Nevertheless, Belassi is positive its sum with will far out value its 2,000 parts.
Although years of claiming 333-horsepower have suddenly gone silent from Belassi’s newest announcement, what we do know is quite a bit about its powertrain: entirely unique to Belassi, the turbocharged I3C16 Marine 3 cylinder 4-stroke displaces 1602cc (100mm bore x 68mm stroke), spinning a forged crankshaft, connecting rods and 9.1:1 compression pistons through NSC coated cylinder liners. The block itself is a closed deck with a bedplate made from gravity-casted aluminum that has been EPD coated (or anodizated) to protect the engine’s external surface against corrosion. It’s topped with a direct-acting 4-valve-per-cylinder dual-overhead camshaft (DOHC) cylinder head and a “high tech forged carbon” valve cover.
The I3C16 is force fed by a single scroll turbocharger (with an integrated water cooled aluminum turbine housing with watercooled cartridge), waste gate valve and pulse valve to control boost pressures, and a water-cooled intercooler circulating through a closed loop cooling system with a heat exchanger integrated into the jet pump. Impressively, the engine is oiled via a gear-driven 6-stage dry sump system feeding into a 3K carbon fiber reservoir and heat extractor. Equally impressive is the water-injected exhaust system flowing into a full carbon 3K muffler with double chromed exhaust tips, giving the Burrasca its Italian supercar look.
Finally, the engine is managed by Belassi’s SMPI-K sequential multi-point injection (with knock control) featuring Belassi’s Adaptive Ride System providing the rider with warning messages, steering, nozzle and mode display functions on a secondary dashboard. The primary digital display features integrated GPS and is operated via co-molded soft touch buttons (or steering bar switches in dual machined-aluminum housings mounted to an adjustable-angle steering system), and provides warning lights for low oil pressure, low fuel level, overheating Indications of boost level, engine rpm, vehicle speed (mph or km/h), hour meter, fuel level, trip, GPS position.
The jet pump begins with an aluminum housing with an integrated heat exchanger for the engine’s closed-loop cooling system, a stainless steel sleeve, a single-stage axial flow 7-vane stator, and a stainless 3-blade prop. The Burrasca’s trim system (VET: standing for Variable E-hydraulic Trim System) employs axial displacement cylinders to engage the electric trim. Both the intake grate and ride plate are made from cast aluminum. Belassi also provides its own take on Sea-Doo’s iBR with DBS (Dynamic Brake System); deploying both a reverse flap made from full 3K carbon fiber (with forged aluminum brackets), and E-Rev, an E-hydraulic Reverse System with “axial displacement cylinders” as well. Most unique is the Burrasca’s adjustable cast-aluminum rear flaps. Yup, functioning trim tabs on a factory-equipped PWC.
All of this adds up to a pretty powerful package that is sure to cut through the turns like a surgeon’s scalpel. Belassi boasts that the new Burrasca achieves “outstanding agility and driveability, making every ride an experience over the limit.” While that might be well and good, this machine is quickly adding up to becoming yet another piece of unobtanium, a toy of the super rich. While no official price has been set, we’ve heard numbers as high at $35,000 being bandied about. And we’re prone to believe it after learning that each Burrasca is individually hand-assembled in the company’s new state-of-the-art Linz headquarters, were all of their own engine development, product design and engineering is located.
Belassi is praising its engineers as artisans, combining two’s strengths of “engineering and technology with the uniqueness of true craftsmanship,” uniting the two in a small production site providing superior hand-craftsmanship over mass produced would-be competitors. As stated in the official press docket, in “early 2015, Belassi was inspired by the concept of a “Manufaktur“, and restructured its engineering, product development as well as partners and suppliers” to better focus on individualization, hand-craftsmanship and “valuing pure quality.” So while each Burrasca is certain to be its own unique machine, hand-built to the buyer’s specifications, it will be a watercraft roughly the same cost as a moderately-optioned SUV. Details beyond what is listed here are absent, so we’ll have to wait and see whether this “dream machine” truly materializes or fades into legend like so many times before.
