The Uprising Has Begun; Overcrowded Sea Lions Overturn Jet Skiers

Sea lions have a hugely growing presence in parts of the Willamette and Columbia Rivers in the state of Oregon. You can hear them and sometimes smell them from a mile away according to locals. Now, the big clumsy marine mammal is being blamed for a run-in with a jet ski earlier this month on the water near the Oregon City Falls.

According to Katu2, Johnny Ulbricht was on the water with his wife around 7pm on Saturday, April 9th when he says a man and his step-son were tipped off their jet ski by a sea lion looming below. Ulbricht rushed to help and pulled the boy out of the water. The man managed to get back on the jet ski, which appeared to be undamaged. Thankfully neither the man or his young step-son were hurt.

Bill Taylor runs Osprey Guide Adventures and he says in the last 20 or so years he has been fishing in the Oregon City area, he’s noticed that the sea lion population has grown and that they’ve become very gutsy and unafraid when it comes to interacting with human beings. With their increasing population, he and many other local fisherman say the sea lions are taking the majority of the salmon population.

“These sea lions have turned into river lions. They’re eating possibly up to 50-60 percent of our salmon run on the Willamette and on the Columbia and nothing is being done about it. I don’t know why. It just befuddles me,” shared a clearly frustrated Taylor.

While sea lions are protected under from hunting under the Marine Mammal Act and it keeps the Willamette river area sea lions safe, area fisherman and pleasure craft enthusiasts say something needs to be done to keep them under control to not only keep the salmon population in the area from running low but to protect boaters from anymore run-ins with these sea lions.

Watercraft Superstore Releases 2016 Catalog, Relaunches Site With Optimized Searching

WCSS COVER - FINAL OUTSIDE

With Spring in full swing and the riding season firing on all eight cylinders, the Watercraft Superstore has unleashed two major tools to make getting you out on the water as painless and easy as possible. First of course, is the release of their 2016 super-sized catalog filled to the rafters with nearly every single item you can imagine (and WCSS can stock).

Additionally, the catalog is also plussed with full-length magazine-grade feature content like a full recap of the annual Skyway Ski Show (in addition to features on personal watercraft used for life saving and search and rescue operations, a step-by-step restoration of an aged jet boat, and much, much more).

And this year’s cover features newly signed WCSS racer Anthony Radetic who was on hand at this year’s Skyway Show to test out the latest machines from Kawasaki, Sea-Doo and Yamaha, as well as charging the surf in Daytona Beach, FL this past weekend.

But if that wasn’t enough, the Watercraft Superstore launched a new site wherein you can browse for parts by plugging in the year, make and model of your watercraft. This new search engine optimization will do all the work of filtering out the stuff that won’t work for your ski, and bring up only the goods that will. It has been shown to shave off thousands of hours of searching, scrolling and browsing when all you really need is one or two specific parts.

Real Review: Jettribe’s PRG 2.0 Multi-Colored Racing Gloves

0

JET

Not all riding gloves are created equal, and the reason being is actually rather simple: build material. For most enthusiasts, strictly using neoprene for a glove is a terrible idea, as neoprene tends to absorb water, making it heavy and saturating the rider’s hands. Despite dozens of drain holes, the material often fails at properly airing out, leaving hands cold, pruney and sensitive. Moreover, neoprene doesn’t offer much in the way of tackiness and is often slick, making for poor grip on the handlebars (and throttle). Some manufacturers try to offset this by silk screen rubbery pads on the fingers and palm, to which, most will peel off after a season’s use.

The above is almost expressly the motivation behind Jettribe’s PRG 2.0 Multi-Colored Racing Gloves‘ use of nylon, air mesh, and Lima Nash suede These unconventional materials offer the PRG 2.0 race gloves added water resistance as well as being quick drying and durable. You won’t find holes punched throughout these gloves, as the air mesh allows water to wick out and air to filter in, drying both the glove and skin within. Jetribe’s corporate policy of designing riding gear for racers first has paid off, as the evolution of materials and build quality have continually improved their entire product line.

Inside, the pre-curved fingers give each finger a natural, comfortable fitment (that will stave off some minor finger fatigue as well) and are coated in wide, silicone strips that provide added grip. Moreover, Jettribe has added three smartly designed suede pads – at the palm, the crook of the thumb and pad – that too are coated in silicone to not only add tactility but provide some added preservation. The pad at the base of the palm features an extended tab to help tug the glove higher on the wrist. And the trigger fingers (index and middle fingers) are broken at the knuckles to allow for better articulation to boot.

A major plus to these gloves are the generous amounts of Velcro used in strapping the gloves around the wrist. Too often competitors gloves try to be cute with their straps, making them cool, aggressive designs, but fail to maintain any sort of traction when it comes to keep them attached. Additionally, the strap itself is wide and topped with a rubberized logo that is easy to grip wet or dry and cinch tighter.

We were pleased that the material doesn’t bunch up in-between the fingers or in the palm while riding, and offers a very minimal amount of chaffing after long rides. The PRG 2.0 race gloves do feature a few parts made of neoprene, but Jettribe’s use of 4-way stretch neoprene is forgiving and comfortable, especially when paired with so much mesh to air it out.

The Jettribe PRG 2.0 Racing Gloves are easily the most comfortable gloves we’ve had the pleasure of testing from the brand and strongly recommend them – although the multicolored pattern was a little garish for our particular taste. Priced at $49.99, they’re moderately priced when compared to other brand’s entries, which makes them a superior purchase when given the fitment.

There were a total of 50 racers each day for the two-day event. There were riders at every skill level and age. We had six brand new racers! Each day of racing consisted of 15 separate heats that would run twice each day. We also had a flyboard exhibition with music pumping each day during our mid-day break to keep the crowds of spectators entertained non-stop all weekend long.

At any given time during the event there were at least a couple of hundred spectators but it is estimated that throughout the weekend there were over 1000 spectators that had made an appearance to check out the action. Our facebook page had nearly 20,000 hits over the week surrounding the event. The spectators and locals constantly made comments of support and excitement for the event. This was the first time any motorized vehicle had ever been allowed on this lake so we were not sure exactly how it would be received locally. We were also blessed with fantastic sunny weather all weekend long.

This event venue is nearly perfect in every way for a closed course race. The location is a very nice county owned park with great amenities such as great parking, nice covered areas, a paved walking path that goes around the entire perimeter of the lake, plenty of room for vendors, racers and spectators, close proximity to downtown and the freeway.

Blake Corning did an amazing job setting up the race site and making sure that all of our sponsors had their banners and other advertisements placed strategically throughout the event site. The event site even looked amazing at night with many of our custom built sponsor signs lit up with LED lights! We had seasoned veteran race director Ian Benson in the tower running the races and John Bonkowski on the lake all weekend running the course marshal/safety boat. I can’t say enough about how awesome this spot is for a race. You really have to be there to appreciate this location. We can’t wait to come back!

The Water X team is already under way to solidify our next race permit. We have already made contact with the governing body for another race at this same site. The discussion of another event at this location has had very positive response. We should have the official permits to do race number two very soon. Our plan for race number 2 is tentatively set for the first weekend in August (August 6 & 7th 2016). The reason that we have chosen this weekend in August is because this is the weekend before the 2016 Grayland Open.

The 2016 Grayland Open Freeride Competition www.grayland-open.com is scheduled for August 11-14th 2016. This event brings most of the top freeriders in the world and is just 40 minutes away from the Grays Harbor Watercross event location. Our hope is that many of the Freeride guys that come out to the Grayland Open will come out early and attend the race at Elma to maybe do a little freestyle and just stick around to compete at the Grayland Open.

If you are interested in continuing as a sponsor or joining up as a sponsor for our next race, Please get in touch with Monte Hughes, our Water X sponsor coordinator at [email protected]

Yamaha Sweeps AquaX Pro Opener at Daytona Beach

It’s hard to argue with the scoreboard, and Yamaha sure likes to be at the top of the scoreboard. Even with surf breaking overhead, even with both Kawasaki and Sea-Doo touting 300-plus-horsepower, and even with a whole lot of people saying that Yamahas just aren’t cut out for offshore racing, this past weekend’s AquaX races in Daytona Beach, Florida effectively shut them right up.

The Watercraft Journal was the industry’s first to bring you a complete recap with a photo gallery and top finishers from Daytona’s heats, and as the scoreboard showed, Yamaha racers – including Aero Aswar, Brian Baldwin and 19-time world champion, Chris MacClugage – were all standing tall on the podium.

Here’s the original press release issued by Yamaha WaveRunners:
Daytona Beach, Fla. — Yamaha WaveRunner racers prevailed over rough surf and tough competition to finish 1-2-3 at the P1 AquaX pro opener held April 23-24 in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Yamaha FX SVHO rider Chris MacClugage led the Yamaha contingent to finish first overall in the Pro Enduro class with FZR rider Aero Aswar and FX SVHO rider Brian Baldwin finishing 2-3 respectively.

Pro racing action was shortened Saturday when rough surf created hazardous conditions for the 25-plus pro riders navigating the tight P1 AquaX race course. The surf was so rough at times that the ride plate was shaken loose from several of the competing brands’ watercraft. As they say in racing, you can’t win if you can’t finish and that was especially true on Saturday.

On Sunday, the race course was lengthened and moved further offshore; making the course more manageable and top speeds much faster. By the end of Moto 3, the reliability and durability of the Yamaha FZR and FX SVHO proved too much for the competition, many of whom did not finish Moto 1 on Saturday, thus taking them out of the overall picture.

Congratulations to Dean’s Team, Broward Motorsports, Riva Motorsports and the family and friends that support Yamaha PWC racing. The next P1 AquaX race for the professional riders is July 2-3 in Sarasota, Fla.

Pro Watercross Announces Over $116,000 In Prize Money For The 2016 Race Season

0715PWC-Pro-Watercross

OK, c’mon now. For all of you who think that “racing is dead” haven’t been paying attention to the escalation happening right now between the current P1 AquaX National Series and the Pro Watercross National Tour. Not only are both race series dotting the continent with a spattering of awesome venues throughout nearly weekend of the season, but both organizations are working the sponsors pretty dang hard to pony up some serious prize money.

Yesterday, Pro Watercross shocked the sport with a staggering $116,000 being offered up in prize money for the year’s races, spread out among all of the classes with “special consideration for the Runabout division,” the press release states. Obviously, there’s some pretty big bait on the hook for all participants, but Pro Watercross is looking to really make attending their events worth the racers’ time and effort, and six figures worth of cash is a really good way to do it.

Here’s the original press release issued yesterday by Pro Watercross:
The Hidden Trails/Sea-Doo Pro Watercross National Tour and World Championship, presented by JetLift will be awarding over $115,000 in contingency for the 2016 race season.

In special consideration for the Runabout division; the Pro-Am Runabout GP and the Pro-Am Runabout Box Stock classes will be in competition with one another to receive the top cash purse for the 2016 race season. The Premier Runabout class with the largest numbers of entries will be awarded the premier level contingency with $3,350 in prize money at each tour stop throughout the race season.

The top Runabout class will be featured in both the National Championship and World Championship’s one-hour CBS Sports TV Shows with competitors qualifying for the main and final event which will be filmed and aired this coming fall. Additionally, the top Runabout class will be featured during each tour stop’s ½ hour TV show airing on the Regional Sports Networks both nationally and internationally.

AQUA

Racers from all over the world converged on the historic site of Daytona Beach, Florida for the second round of the P1 Aqua X Tour. The first round was held in Tavares, Florida but it was strictly a stop for the Amateur class jet ski racers. This round in Daytona was going to include the Professional racers into the mix. Some of these professional racers had multiple world titles under their belts and it included the likes of Mike Klippenstein, Cyrille Lemoine, Chris Macclugage, Craig Warner and Dustin Farthing to name a few.

Saturday was the first day of racing and the forecast was perfect. The riders all descended onto the beach and the air had a lot of adrenaline swirling around. The day started of with the mandatory rider’s briefing where the racers got their instructions from head marshal Laitham Kellum. Then it was time to get the show on the road.

4

First up was the Junior Ski class; these are the youngest riders allowed to race. They included Haden Skellett, Taylor Skellett, Sammy Nehme and newcomer to surf racing, Deven Farthing. Deven was starting off where his father Dustin Farthing started racing in the exact same location twenty-three years ago.

The next race was the Spark and Sport GP class. This is one of the fan favorites. Johnnie Smith had spent the late night hours getting his ski ready and got it working just in time to make the trip to Daytona. The surf was constant during the day and it made for some exciting racing and it would have no mercy on the riders as some got to feel the water throughout the day. The Spark class had a name that has been rising up in the racing circuit through closed course: Preston Clark made his Aqua X debut and he showed that he could hang on with the best of them.

11

The Pro Sprint GP bought the big names such as Chris MacClugage, Dustin Motzouris, Jimmy Wilson and returning racer Broc Harris. The surf gave the class a challenging course and they were pure fun to watch as they tackled the course. The Daytona round of AquaX has always been a crowd favorite, and this year was no different. But what surprised many was the influx of top tier racers who (for many) came out of retirement to compete.

The Amateur Enduro started there second round of racing after the previous location of Tavares, Florida. As with previous years the 300 Class along with the 250 and 200 classes all raced together. Chris Saxon would take the top spot in the 300 class. Tommy Olswang would take the top position in the 250 class and Chris Saxon’s brother, Chad held down the top spot in the 200 class.

23

The Pro Enduro racers then took to the water and it was a huge crowd draw for this race as some of the best jet ski racers from all over the world looked to battle it out. This was there first race this season and you could feel the excitement in the air before the green flag dropped. The racers battled it out but due to an unforeseen stoppage, the race was called so close to the end. After calculations of positions, Chris Macclugage received the top spot for the race and showed why he has 19 world titles. This concluded the first day of racing.

Sunday, the second day of racing, proved to be another fantastic weather day with not a single cloud in the sky. The day started off with the Amateur Enduro race and was then followed by the Pro Enduro race. These two races were supposed to take place on Saturday but due to time restraints were made up on Sunday. Around midday the Junior racers took to the course and were followed by the Sport GP, Spark and Pro Sprint classes. Then the Amateur Enduro took to the course again and was immediately followed by the Pro Enduro racers. Finally the Juniors got one last race along with the Sport GP, Spark and Pro Sprint respectively.

21

The weekend was capped off with the podium presentation where the top three riders in each race were awarded trophies. In the Pro Enduro the top three riders were Chris MacClugage, Aero Aswar and Brian Baldwin. The Amateur Enduro saw Chris Saxon take home the top spot in the 300 class, Tommy Olswang in the 250 class and Chad Saxon took top honors in the 200 class.

In the Sport class Sam Nehme took home the win. In the Pro Sprint GP James Wilson had the top spot. The Spark Class saw Eric Gabryel grab top honors. The Juniors had Haden Skellett taking home the top spot. The weekend was filled with a lot of thrills and some of the greatest racing ever. As everyone was packing up they were already thinking ahead to the next rounds. Next stop is St. Cloud, Florida for the Amateur Enduro race on the 21st of May.

Case of The Mondays: Tyrannosaurus RXP-Rex Attacks Toronto

“Pfft! Everybody knows dinosaurs had feathers,” the Internet know-it-alls chorused when Universal’s “Jurassic World” first premiered two years ago. Well, did you know that the infamous terrible lizard (ie. the tyrannosaurus rex or “T-Rex”) was also known to be a fierce predator both on land and water? Besides being a quality swimmer in shallow-to-moderate depths, the T-Rex was also known to seek its prey via personal watercraft!

That’s right! Although famous for its almost comically underdeveloped arms, the T-Rex could aptly use its dexterous fingers to smartly operate a supercharged Sea-Doo’s iTC trigger, applying all 260-supercharged-horses in pursuit of its next victim. And while the tyrannosaur was widely understood by paleontologists for frequenting the northern territories of Utah, Montana and the Dakotas, one such waterborne specimen was recently discovered to roam the waterways of Toronto, Canada. A terrifying discovery to say the least.

Recently, a reenactment was filmed in conjunction with Canada’s top historians, geological society and Kiwanis chapter. Although unlikely to be re-aired, many believed this to have first surfaced on Discovery Channel prior to being illegally pirated and shared on a random Facebook page. Nevertheless, the video recreation is, according to top climatologists and the Obama Administration, as being “absolutely 100-percent historically accurate.” Steven Spielberg even noted that the PWC-mounted T-Rex has “a very significant part in the upcoming [“Jurassic World”] sequel.” Clever girl…
