Video: Is it a Plane? Is it a PWC? It’s The FlyNano

0

The FlyNano is a hybrid half jet ski and half seaplane. Click the link to see it in action. My first thought was, wow, this looks like a manned drone. Although, the craft is currently under development in Finland, the company is accepting non-binding letters of intent to buy for serious inquiries only. It will be available worldwide this year.

Weighing only 70kgs, the FlyNano can easily be carried by two people. The machine’s body is handcrafted and comprised of carbon composite. There’s only room for one in this hovercraft. It’s just the pilot and nothing else. No room for cargo, not even your dog! The FlyNano doesn’t require a pilot’s license, yet the company stresses the importance of aviation experience even though the operator is only hovering above the water.

The craft is 3.8 meters long, 1.3 meters high, with a wingspan of 4.8 meters. You can top out at 75mph. Get this, it’s fully electric so consider it a green machine. A full charge takes about an hour. Flight time has yet to be determined. Because of it’s lightweight body, it should only be used on flat water. As of this writing, the price tag is around $40,000. Visit the FlyNano website for contact information and other details.

Here is what Chief Test Pilot Pekka Kauppinen had to say about the FlyNano:
“Compared to regular general aviation aircraft, FlyNano may best be described as a go-cart compared to a regular car. Due to its small size and light weight the sensation of speed is remarkable. It is very unlike the feeling you get when flying common Cessnas and Pipers, although the absolute speeds are actually quite alike, the latter being even a bit faster, that is. When reviewing the experience, FlyNano is in fact more comparable to waterjets and quad bikes than regular airplanes or microlights.

Think about it! You get in, not from the pier, but from the water. A wet or dry suit to keep you warm is necessary. You strap yourself to the seat and wear a helmet to avoid spray and wind chill. No clearances, no run-ups, no checklists. The lake is open for takeoff. The fun starts immediately. It is ecstatic.

The flight is characterized by a high tempo and full concentration is required at all times. The open cockpit makes flying even more daring and flying is sure to be filled with adrenaline and euphoria. As skills develop and confidence builds up the excitement of novelty will naturally abate, but new challenges are right behind the corner keeping up the thrill. It is relatively easy to learn how to operate FlyNano safely, but mastery in all situations requires hours and hours of practice. With FlyNano full satisfaction is guaranteed.”

Gallery: 2018 WaveDaze Presented by Torrent Pumps & VA Beach Wavejunkies

0

What a gorgeous weekend! Mother Nature didn’t disappoint this year with the abundant sunshine and warm weather at the 2018 WaveDaze, which was presented by Torrent Pumps and the Virginia Beach Wavejunkies. For many people, WaveDaze is the first opportunity to test out the new mod or new winter build for the season. WaveDaze falls during a great time of the year where those who attend get a jump-start on their season without having to re-winterize their ski afterwards (hopefully).

Similar to the Daytona Freeride, WaveDaze provides an opportunity for like-minded PWC enthusiasts to come together, hang out, and ride in the ocean! According to Dan Swartz, the long-time organizer of this outstanding event, 114 people registered to ride at WaveDaze this year. The nice part about attending WaveDaze is that the proceeds, especially from the “waffle” (raffle) go to charity. This year, the WaveDaze charity was Spikes K9 Fund.

A notable item about this trip was the relatively large amount of children that also attended. We’ve always been shocked on how few women and kids join us at PWC events that are on these amazing beaches. The 2018 WaveDaze at Virginia Beach surely provided a great vacation for those who came out! They even got to watch the “Chicken Race”, which took place mid-day Saturday. The Chicken Race consisted of an ocean race around buoys with Kawasaki SCs aka Sport Cruisers aka Super Chickens. The winners were Craig and Seth Hammond.

Torrent really stepped up big time this year as the title sponsor. Torrent donated a brand new Torrent 148 assembled pump with remanufactured SNL Industries driveshaft! The lucky winner was Matt Berridge who plans to use it in his ski. When asked about this years’ WaveDaze, Torrent said, “2018 WaveDaze was the first time we were the title sponsor for an event, so this was a big event for us this year. We have been coming to WaveDaze almost since the beginning so we were thrilled when Dan Swartz offered us the title sponsor position this year. The last six years we have been doing the Torrent pumps, it has been a lot of work, so this was time for us to relax and enjoy the people there and the event itself. The 2018 WaveDaze was the warmest I ever remember. Temperatures of 80-85 degrees every day, I can only hope that every WaveDaze will be like that. Winds all along the east coast were high that weekend, but I’ll take that for the warm temps.”

P&P Performance was one of the vendors in attendance as well. P&P Performance specializes in getting you the right parts the first time around. Phil & Penny (P&P) Clemmons build and tune some of the finest PWC’s in our industry, specializing in freestyle and freeride. If you’ve ever had the opportunity to ride a P&P built ski, you’ll know it is top notch, from the perfect fitting footholds built with Hydro-Turf, to the impeccable response between engine, hull, pump, carbs, and pipe to work in perfect harmony.

Many people think that you can slap a bunch of parts together and the ski will work great, but Phil has spent many years honing his skills with this art of the build and tune. One of P&P Performance’s Pro Freeriders, James Juvet, had this to say about the event, “WaveDaze is the light at the end of another drawn out Northeast winter for myself and the TigerCraft crew. You can always count on Dan Swartz and the VB Wavejunkies to throw an awesome event. I’m always hyped to ride with the legends, the locals, and the up and coming riders. I can’t think of a better way to kick off the spring sessions back home!”

Speaking of “The TigerCraft Crew”, they were well represented on the beach this year. They have really become a major player in the surf industry, using their motto of “major moves only.” We had the pleasure of testing the new TigerCraft M1 hull in the Virginia Beach surf. It was a blast! We loved slashing waves, doing re-entries, along with a few backflips in the smaller surf on Saturday. It exceeded all expectations, carving really well along the waves, while still being nimble-feeling to boost off the waves for some enjoyable aerial maneuvers. We had a chance to interview TigerCraft about the M1 hull.

The Watercraft Journal: What is the inspiration behind this hull?

TigerCraft: The M1 hull has been on the planning board for quite some time. It came about in 2015 while Mick Anthony won the IFWA world championship with a set of aluminum rails bolted on his Aquabot v2.

WCJ: What makes this hull special over other hulls?

TC: The rails, or often called death fins that Mick used to run. We incorporated them into the M1, along with a larger pump tunnel, different rocker, thinner nose… the list goes on. Mick has done the homework with hull designs, shapes and the pros/cons that each does. We feel this is a perfect balance for the top pro or the weekend shredder.

WJC: What’s the target demographic for this hull?

TC: Since it is based off a v2, still our most popular ski, it is great in surf and flatwater. The larger pump tunnel hooks up better and the rails offer great stability and buoyancy from the large landings. We are constantly changing things and learn from each new model we produce. I’m not a big fan of cutting up existing shapes to then make them a running plug. So, we make new molds for every new concept we try. We have a lot of molds! There’s not a bad ski out there but we are always innovating and looking for the slightest advantage we can get over the competition.

Wavejunkie and long-time legend of WaveDaze, Brian Sawyer, summed up this year’s event very well. Brian said, “To go to a Moto Surf event with a crew or a family is no small task. We are pleased and grateful that so many of our friends from every direction would choose to spend time at WaveDaze with us. Over the past 12 years, we have hosted several thousand guests and it wouldn’t be possible without the generous support from our partners and the city of Virginia Beach.”

Keep a lookout for WaveDaze 2.0 which is scheduled for October 19-21st! We hope you enjoy the photos that were taken on Saturday by Ryan Doberstein, thanks greatly to a borrowed 150-600mm lens from #SigmaPhoto. Thanks Matt Juvet, of B-Team Productions, for sourcing this lens for us!

Help Support WA Local Jet Ski Photographer Theft Victim

0

Some people suck, but you don’t have to be one. Retired US Marine, Washington State Department of Corrections instructor, and part time jet ski racing photographer, Jim Flynn had all of his cameras, lenses and equipment stolen last week when his car was broken into. A regular presence at the Washington Water X and Grayland Open events, the ever-affable Flynn has become a favorite of all of those in attendance as well as those who promote the sport for veterans and youth racers alike.

Obviously, the loss is pretty catastrophic and recouping that much equipment would take anyone quite a long time (meaning several years). We’re hoping that any and all of you reading this from across the planet will help a man who has so willingly given up so much of his own life to serve others, and support a fellow brother in the sport. Donations can be made by sending a “gift” on PayPal.com to [email protected] – we did it, so can you.

Kim McKay wrote the following Facebook post letting everyone know what happened to Flynn and how we can help HERE:
This out to my friends and race community – our good friend, Jim Flynn who volunteers his time and has shot amazing photos at our local races and even World Finals, had some unfortunate circumstances. While we are thankful he is safe, sadly, he had ALL of his cameras, lenses, and camera equipment was stolen. Insurance reimburses for some, less depreciation, so we all know he will be short gear. Him losing his equipment is comparable to us losing a jet ski, or multiple jet skis.

Jim will be posting a link in the next few days from this last Water X race. Please support our friend in our racing family. If you see some prints you like, please purchase from him. He does a lot for our community.

Also, I am putting a raffle together to be held at Pateros. Bring your dollars for tickets and support our local photographer. It’s possible that Jim may have a photo booth at Pateros as well. If this develops, again, please support our race family! Thanks friends! With Dawn Ferrell-Cox Blake Corning

Thank you Monte Hughes, a PayPal for Jim is as follows [email protected]. Marcus Boyle set the bar high and is sending PayPal for his killer prints, everyone else please do the same. More pics and a link are coming.

Video: Insane Drone Footage From Fishski Australia

0

Check out this epic footage captured on a Splash Drone 3 by Jason McColl, a team member of Fishski Australia. The clip is from a Fishski Australia fishing excursion in Hervey Bay, Queensland, Australia. The team is geared up for a big day of sport-fishing from their personal watercraft. As they get underway, the drone follows from above.

The drone footage is amazing and surpasses many other drone sequences we’ve viewed. The Splash 3 Drone is just flat out bad ass! The scenery is impressive and it’s enjoyable watching the watercraft move through the sparkling turquoise water. The water has high visibility making the big fish easy to spot as they glide just under the surface.

Watching the Fishski Australia team reel in a few marlin while on and off their jet skis makes Hervey Bay look like a fun place to ride and fish. The water is fairly shallow where they’re catching good sized fish, which makes a jet ski the perfect watercraft to use when fishing this particular part of the Bay. Talk about a great day on the water! Man, these guys are living the life.

The Hervey Bay region is absolutely beautiful and the drone footage is incredible. The music used in the clip is cool and upbeat and adds a nice touch to the film. No need to hit mute during this piece. The four minute YouTube video shared by PaxSki will leave you wanting more and have you longing for carefree sunny days on the water. I’m ready to ride, how about you?

Gallery: Hydro-Turf JetJam Rounds 3&4 Rotary Beach, Lake Havasu City, AZ

0

As the little desert city along the shore of the mighty Colorado River starts to awake from its Winter slumber and the snow birds start to head home, the 2018 Hydro-Turf JetJam Racing series was prepping for its second weekend of racing in Lake Havasu City, AZ at the infamous Rotary Park. Friday during setup of the race site, the winds coming from California had presented the JetJam Redshirt crew a challenge of winds topping 30-plus mph! The challenge was accepted, course was set and they were ready to go for the weekend!

Saturday the winds were now a slight breeze and racers who had been to the site on Friday to start setting up their pits were relieved they had subsided and a great weekend was upon them. With the ever-growing Juniors classes, the 10-12 stock class had Jake Pierce showing Sebastien Girello and Dominic Cannady the fast way around the track and the 13-15’s Juniors had Brady Courson on top of a stacked class with great battles between Theo Beaumer and Revin Harris on the podium. Nedra Atwood had her cowbell ringing all weekend supporting her Junior racers!

Veteran Ski GP1 Open had Jeremy Poper coming all the way from Albuquerque, NM to show Joel Thayer and JB Gasperone of AZ he was number one for Saturday. Ski GP4 Stock had 14 riders take the line and battles between all were all throughout the course all day with Preston Matzdorff taking the overall win for Round 3. Women’s Ski GP2 limited, Kayoko Del Pardo held off Trisha Juarez and Bridget Poper for the top spot of the podium for Saturday.

Vintage GP1 550 Rob Flores made his way down from Las Vegas to Havasu for an overall win Saturday with Chris Hagest taking second and Brock Austin taking third. In Runabout GP2.2 Limited, Jason Ward from San Leandro, CA, took the top spot with Doug Wolff and Thomas Pagen taking second and third, respectively. One of the premier classes of the day was Ski GP1 Open, where Preston Matzdorff of Lake Havasu City, AZ atop his Kawasaki SX-R1500 took the top spot with JB Gaspeone and Aaron Geweke piloting Bullet hulls taking second and third for Saturday.

After a beautiful sunset that Arizona gives its residents every night, Sunday was upon us with more exciting racing on the waters of Lake Havasu for Round 4 of JetJam racing. Once again, Jake Pierce took the top spot on the podium over Sebastien Girello and Dominic Cannady for the Junior 10-12 GP3 Stock. Junior 13-15 GP3 Stock had Revin Harris taking the win over Brady Courson and Stevie Bascom. Sport GP3 Stock had Tyler Hill edging out Nick Leseney and Adam Levings for the win on Sunday. Ski GP2 Limited had Aaron Geweke, Trisha Juarez and Nathan Lopez on the top spots.

Runabout GP3 Stock had Brandon Warner taking the win over JoJo Thompson and Jackson Rod. Runabout GP2.3 Spark Only, a class gaining a lot of traction early, had Justin Black taking first with Kyle Cameron and Cory Bloedorn rounding out the class. X2 GP1 Open had a full 8 riders on the line. Team Retro Racing swept the podium on Sunday with Doug Wolff taking first, Matthew Goade in second and James Gagnon taking third. Once again, in Ski GP1 Open, Preston Matzdorff of Lake Havasu City, AZ showed Tim Warner of Albuquerque, NM and JB Gasperone of Flagstaff, AZ, he was the one to beat and taking the top spot again for Sunday.

During Sunday’s awards, JetJam gave away a SSR-125 pit bike to those participants who had raced Rounds 1-4. The lucky recipient was James Gagnon, whose ticket was pulled for the bike that was sponsored by RiverRat Motorsports in Lake Havasu City, AZ. We all know any event cannot move forward without the great support from sponsors; including title sponsor Hydro-Turf, presenting sponsor Bud Light, and Shark Energy Drink, Hidden Trails Motorsports, Skat-Trak, JetRenu. For more results and info to race with JetJam, please check out www.JetJam.racing.

Win the Ultra 310LX From the Oscars And a Trip to Hollywood

1

Hey, remember when Jimmy Kimmel gave away a brand new Kawasaki Ultra 310LX JetSki at the Oscars earlier this year? No? Well, we covered it on The Watercraft Journal – not once, but twice. Either way, it was a pretty big deal for Kawasaki and while the Hollywood elitists guffawed and snorted at the idea of riding a supercharged Ultra around Havasu, many of us didn’t. That’s right, because a 2018 Kawasaki Ultra 310LX JetSki is still the most powerful jet ski ever made.

Kimmel asked that Oscar winners keep their speeches as brief as possible, and he with the shortest speech would win the ski. That night, costume designer Mark Bridges won for the shortest acceptance speech of the night and won the Ultra 310LX, but rather than attaching a trailer hitch to his Nissan Leaf, Bridges gave up the Kawasaki to be raffled off to those who donate to the Motion Picture & Television Fund (MPTF). The MPTF “provides much needed support and services to both current and retired members of the entertainment industry. From financial assistance and counseling, to home safety help and finding the right health insurance, MPTF provides the entertainment community with a wide range of programs and services available to all ages.”

In addition to winning the 2018 Kawasaki Ultra 310LX JetSki, you’ll also be flown to Los Angeles, put up in the opulent and notably haunted Beverly Hills Hotel and get two tickets to see the insufferable blowhard in person during a filming of Jimmy Kimmel Live! and even sit in the super exclusive greenroom. There’s no word if the free hotel stay in Lake Havasu City, AZ is still available or part of the prize. So yeah, enter here and pony up some dough to help starving actors and win a new JetSki.

Yuusuke Hirasaka Reveals Insane Billet Fully-Adjustable SX-R 1500 Pump Nozzles

1

Besides a Facebook wall full of pictures of absolutely delicious-looking waffles (no, we’re not joking), Wakayama, Japan local and jet ski racer and parts developer, Yuusuke Hirasaka has been letting the world quietly know about an insane project he’s been working on for the past few years: complete adjustable, race-ready billet-aluminum CNC’ed pump nozzles for the new Kawasaki SX-R 1500.

Recently, Hirasaka revealed some rather interesting data after some extensive testing. He writes, “Many tests for a billet pump nozzles for 1500 SX-R! It started from the design of fluid simulation and repeated the real run test. There’s pretty good data on the run test here!” What is unique to these bolt-on nozzle kits is that the pump nozzle ring and steering nozzle ring are interchangeable. This way a rider can exchange each part to fit their preferred setting.

Hirasaka notes, the “acceleration [is] good, top speed [is] good, handling [is] good, more than one surprise to the performance!” Moreover, Hirasaka put great care into ensuring that the hardware couldn’t deform the nozzles when installed like competitor’s products. Over-tightening is no longer an issue, he assures, as replacement parts are all machined within very tight specifics. The data sheet included here shows how the different nozzles direct thrust depending on the sized rings. The Watercraft Journal is watching the development of these nozzles closely and will have more updates as they arrive.

Gallery: 2018 P1 Aqua X Round 1, Miami, Florida

0

As the 2018 season of P1 Aqua X was ready to release their schedule everyone was excited for it get started and taking their racing to Daytona Beach, Florida as it has been for the past five years. To the surprise of the majority of the people instead of Daytona being the first stop on the tour, it showed Miami Florida as the season opener instead and Daytona Beach being completely removed.

The tour chose a historically iconic venue in the Miami marine Stadium, which was located on Key Biscayne. Twenty-five years ago it was a Mecca for boat racing and other events such as the Miss Universe pageant, and concerts. It was slated as an entertainment marvel with the city of Miami in the background. Unfortunately Mother Nature had other plans and Hurricane Andrew, which is known as one of the most catastrophic storms in United States history unleashed her devastation on South Florida. The stadium sustained major damage that can still be seen today. Since then the stadium has only seen Dragon Boat races in front of it and has been home to the Miami International boat show.

Aqua X along with P1 SuperStock would be the return of motor racing to the waters in front of the stadium. The first day of racing had beautiful weather which South Florida is typically known for and the racers were finishing up some last minute tweaks on their machines to get ready for what was scheduled to be an exciting weekend of racing.

The schedule had the day starting off with the P1 SuperStock boats starting. Unfortunately things would not go as smoothly as everyone had anticipated. The day would start off with a marine hold due to wild life in the waters. Due to the stadium’s location leading into a cove there were dolphins, sea turtles and manatees that congregated in the waters. This continued for quite some time and the schedule would have to be revamped. The crowds that gathered still waited patiently with the hopes of seeing some action on the waters. The Jet Surf team, and some BMX riders that performed would entertain them.

Finally things got started with the Sprint classes. In the Spark race it would be Justin Bellinzoni who would take the top spot taking the hole shot and not relinquishing it the entire race. Jason Lester and Eric Gabryel would follow him respectively. Next on the starting line would be the Junior Ski event. As with many years and races in the past it would the dynamic trio of Hayden Skellett, Taylor Skellett, and Sammy Nehme who would race against each other. Hayden would take the win followed by Sammy and then Taylor to round it out.

The Ski Class would be next with David Cabrera taking the win on his Kawasaki SKR. He would beat out Michael Kelberer and taking third would be Kirk Britto. Kirk who had discontinued racing last season due to a shoulder injury said, “The shoulder feels good and I’m glad to be back out there competing.”

The Sport GP race had World Champion Sam Nehme going against the field. As the racers took off from the starting line it was not looking good for Sam as he was working out an issue with his ski. He got it fixed pretty quickly and took off passing many in the field as the race continued. He would get the pass of the weekend by overtaking the lead from Eric Degler on the final buoy going into the start/finish line and the crowd went crazy. Sam would take the win and put Team Broward Motorsports on top. Once again the event was put on hold because of marine life on the course and people were starting to wonder if there would be any more racing for the day.

After a long hold, racing would continue with the Amateur Enduro. It would be Jose Gonzalez who would take the top spot in the 200 Class followed by Scott Reeves and Amanda Lecheminant. The 300 Class would also race but no points were awarded, as they were qualifiers. Again the racing was put on hold because of the marine life on the track and it was announced that the Pros would have to wait till Sunday to race. Miami was starting to have its issues and hopefully racing would go smoother on Sunday.

Sunday arrived and everyone was hoping to get in their races to make up for Saturday and get the right amount of heats in for Sunday. The day would start off with rain and that was always a wrench in how things would go from there. The day would start with the Professionals to do their first moto of the weekend. The crowd had already started to arrive despite the rain. The rain would hold up and the racers would launch their skis. This was a huge line-up, as many world champions would be battling against each other. As the racers were doing their orientation and parade laps thunder and lightning could be seen and it was close to the stadium’s location.

The racers had to put their skis on the small beach area adjacent to the stadium and racing was put on hold due to weather. Finally the all clear was given and the Pros would launch their skis and racing would get underway. The hole shot by Eric Francis on his Yamaha GP1800. Sea-Doo team Extreme rider Erminio Iantosca would chase him on his RXT-X. Iantosca who was still reeling from the loss of his father and biggest supporter three weeks prior wasn’t sure if he would race again. His father would want him to continue racing and make him proud. Iantosca prior to the race would dedicate this season to his dad and family. Francis would take the top spot with Iantosca taking second and Macclugage taking third. With Iantosca taking second it was finally an end of Yamaha’s reign on sweeping the top spots and if it continued their dominance on the podiums as it was in the World finals in Key West in December.

Unfortunately, racing was put on hold again as it had been on Saturday due to a marine hold. When racing continued it would be Sam Nehme taking the top spot in the Sport GP, David Cabrera taking top honors in the Pro Ski Class and Haden Skellett taking the top spot in the Junior Class.

This would end the weekend of racing for the weekend. With only one moto of racing for the pros there was a lot of disappointment by the riders and it is obvious that picking Miami instead of Daytona wasn’t a great move. It will be interesting if going back to Daytona will be in the future plans as it is a lot more forgiving with the holds. Until that decision is made the Pro racers can only look forward to their next round of racing in June in St Petersburg Florida and the amateurs looking forward to their race In St Cloud Florida next month.
